ABOUT C2S2

Assuring a future for wildlife

In 2005, five of the world’s leading endangered species breeding and management centers in the U.S.
came together to save species in a way that’s never been done before.

Their vision became Conservation Centers for Species Survival.

Vision

Our vision is that animals on the brink of extinction grow into robust, healthy populations that thrive in their natural environment.

Mission

A global trusted network saving species through collaboration, science, and managed care.

Since its inception, C2S2 has grown from 5 initial members to 11 members and we are continuing to expand. The members help protect and grow populations of C2S2’s key target species. Nearly 50% of all animal species on earth are threatened with extinction or face decline. C2S2’s initiatives are uniquely designed to specifically address the needs of various species in peril.

Partnership for Species

Creating connections between large, landscape facilities to sustainability manage herds, increase communication, and support international conservation

Programs

Source Population Alliance

A private/ public sector alliance creating meaningful, secured populations of herd species

North American Species

Saving native species and sustaining a legacy of biodiversity in our backyards

our members

The C2S2 Conservation Centers and Affiliates are world leaders that have recovered some of the rarest species on the planet, from the giant panda to the black-footed ferret to scimitar-horned oryx. The collaboration represents 100,000 acres of large, naturalistic areas and decades of experience in wildlife management, recovery efforts, and reintroduction programs. These members make our entire operation possible.

Associate members

Affiliate Members are organizations (often accredited zoos, but may also be conservation-minded ranches) committed to sustainability and conservation as a priority. Each Affiliate participates in one or more of C2S2’s programs or initiatives, and a representative from the institution serves on C2S2’s Advisory Board.

Conservation centers

Conservation Centers are Core Members with at least 500 acres of land dedicated to wildlife. These institutions bring a strong history of conservation, a focus on scientific research, and a commitment to species breeding and management. By creating environments that closely resemble native habitats and herd dynamics, they provide naturalistic settings with minimal public disturbance. A representative of each Conservation Center serves on the C2S2 Board of Directors.
